COVID-19: UN assures rapid vaccine delivery in Nigeria

The United Nations Global Lead Coordinator for COVID-19 Vaccine Readiness and Delivery, Mr Ted Chaiban, has assured Nigeria of support to accelerate inoculation of its citizens by enhancing vaccine delivery and enlightenment of the people.

The coordinator gave the assurance during a visit to Kano to assess the state’s performance in vaccine delivery and storage.

He said Nigeria has, so far, recorded 6.7 per cent coverage of its population.

He, however, said there was the need for more enlightenment to achieve more results.

“In 2021, the supply of COVID vaccine was limited but the situation is improving and the concerns are now moving towards issues of delivery and getting vaccines into the arms of people. So our mission in the vaccine delivery partnership is to support Nigeria with this acceleration.

“Nigeria is currently at 6.7% of full vaccine coverage when it comes to COVID-19. But it is taking steps to accelerate delivery and we have had excellent discussions at the federal level and in Kano State in terms of specific staff that can be taken to accelerate the delivery of the vaccine,” he said.

Earlier, Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje called for the establishment of a vaccine hub to ease access and control of pandemics like COVID-19 in Kano, being the most populated state in the North.
