COVID-19: Ogun confirms new case, identifies 32 care-givers, relatives

Ogun State Government has confirmed a new case of coronavirus (COVID-19), which brings the total number of patients so far recorded in the state to three.

Daily Trust recalls that an Italian and a Nigerian contact, who were recently discharged after recovering from the coronavirus, were the first two cases recorded in the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, who briefed journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday, said the 62 years old new male patient returned to Nigeria from the United Kingdom (UK) on March 17.

Coker, who was flanked by the Special Adviser to the governor (Public Communications), Remmy Hazzan, disclosed that the index case, who has history of cough, was tested positive to COVID-19.

The Commissioner said the patient has been transferred to the state’s isolation centre at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

She disclosed that 32 contacts comprising 28 healthcare-givers and four family members have been identified in connection with the COVID-19 patient.

The Commissioner explained that the patient since his return to the country had isolated himself, saying the action made tracing of his contacts easy.

She said: “Today, we have a newly confirmed case of COVID-19 in Ogun state. The said case is 62-year-old male who resides in Sagamu. He had history of recent travel, returning on the 17th of March. He presented his history of cough, got tested and the test came out positive.

“Our priority at the moment is to provide care for the gentleman. He is being transferred to our isolation centre which is located at OOUTH, Sagamu.

“He has recently returned from the United Kingdom and we have contact – traced all his contacts who are 28 healthcare-givers, four members of his family, 32 all together.

“He has been very responsible by isolating himself since he arrived; therefore, it makes our job quite easy in tracing his contacts.”
