COVID-19: Lagos records 30 deaths in 1 week — Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has disclosed that over 30 deaths have been recorded in the current third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Lagos State.

He disclosed this while giving an update on the third wave of the pandemic to newsmen in Lagos, saying an average of six deaths was recorded per day in the last week.

Sanwo-Olu said the epidemiology update from the beginning of the outbreak in February 2020 to date showed that Lagos State recorded a total of 64,032 confirmed cases of COVID-19, out of which 56,336 have recovered, while 2,755 are currently being managed actively in the community.

He also disclosed that about 5,029 patients have been admitted into the various COVID-19 care centres in Lagos and 390 fatalities were recorded.

According to the governor, the positivity rate of COVID-19 in the state has risen from 1.1 per cent at the end of June 2021 to 7 per cent at the end of July 2021.

He added that as of August 1, 2021, the positivity rate in Lagos was 8.9 per cent.

This, he said, has resulted in 4,300 confirmed cases in July alone and 352 admissions into the isolation facilities.

He however warned that the necessary sense of alarm should not be responded to with panic, but with a firm resolve and determination to reverse the trend.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the percentage of residents that have received two doses of the vaccine in the state stood at 1 per cent as a total of 404,414 got the first dose while 243,374 got the second dose of the vaccine.

“This is quite low, especially considering that we are now confronted by a third wave, and we are exploring all avenues possible to ramp up access to vaccination so as to reach our herd immunity target of administering vaccines to at least 60 per cent of the population of Lagos State,” he said.
