COVID-19: Kano varsity fabricates automated thermometer, hand sanitizer

As part of its contribution towards the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil, has produced locally manufactured infrared temperature measuring device and hand sanitizers.

Unveiling the products on Monday, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Alhaji Musa, said the University had tasked its academic community to come up with innovative ideas that will translate into fabrication of equipment and facilities that will be of tremendous support in the fight against COVID-19.

“If harnessed and utilized properly, the equipment will go a long way in bringing succor and relief to the ongoing effort of government and well spirited individual towards overcoming the challenges of COVID-19,” Prof Musa said.

He said the contribution of the University was galvanized from three Faculties of the University, namely, Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Science and Technology Education, adding that the products include Solar Powered Infrared-Temperature Measuring Devices produced by the Faculty of Engineering.

Others were Solar Powered Sensitive Sanitizing Machines produced by Faculty of Engineering; Hand Sanitizers that meet up the World Health Organization (WHO) standard – produced by the Department of Chemistry, and Awareness Banners on COVID-19 – produced by the Department of Technical and Vocational Education.

Prof Musa said the equipment were suitable for usage in hospitals, schools, places of worship, supermarkets, banks and any other places where crowd control is required such as viewing and event centers.

“In addition, it is most suitable for use in both rural and urban areas as the technology is solar-powered driven. The University has so far produced 20 pieces each of solar powered infrared devices and sanitizer for donation to the State Government,” he said.

He called on well spirited individuals and governments to support the production of more units of these equipment for distribution.
