The Dean of the Faculty of Education of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Prof. Anthony Eze, has said lack of sufficient knowledge and facilities for virtual learning have disrupted education during the COVID-19 lockdown.
In an interview with newsmen in Awka, Prof. Eze said the lockdown was affecting education because many students did not have facilities to learn from home.
He said, “Virtual learning is the only way we can bridge the gap that this lockdown is causing in the education sector; we are losing a lot, although it is not peculiar to Nigeria. “Unfortunately, we do not have what it takes to make it effective, it requires constant electricity, computers and communication gadgets for students and cost-effective data.
“Virtual learning is not working in Nigeria, there is no place where online learning is working, at best government has to invest in electricity and required equipment.”
He said the lost time could be recovered when the pandemic was over; and urged African leaders to consider homegrown solutions to the disease by giving necessary attention to African scientists and their research.
