The Victims Support Fund (VSF) task force on COVID-19 has provided Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to six schools in Edo and Bayelsa states.
The schools are Anglican Girls Grammar School, Benin City; Itohan Girls Grammar School, Benin City and Ewohimi Secondary School Ikeken Ewohimi Esan South East.
Others are Community Secondary School, Otuoke-Otuabagi in Ogbia Local Government Area, Community Secondary School Sagbama in Sagbama LGA, and Kaima Grammar School, Kolokumo/Opokuma LGA, Bayelsa State.
Speaking at the hand-over at separate ceremonies in Benin and Yenagoa, VSF chairperson, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, said the project was part of its 3rd phase programme to provide WASH facilities to 54 schools in 18 states.
“Each of the schools will receive a solar-powered borehole, four hand wash stations, 2,000 packets of reusable face masks, five pieces of four litres hand sanitizers, 120 bottles of 500ml liquid hand wash and five cartons of bleach.
She said three schools in each state have been chosen to benefit from it following the successful implementation of the 1st and 2nd phases of the VSF COVID-19 emergency intervention programme, which involved the distribution of food, medical consumables and personal protective equipment (PPE) to 19 states.
Earlier, the principal of Anglican Girls Grammar School,Veronica Egbon, in Edo State, commended VSF for the items, noting that they would be beneficial to the school.
Bayelsa Commissioner for Health, Dr Newton Igwele, commended the non-government organisation for the gesture which he described as a welcome development.
In her remarks, Mrs Grace Dafese, Principal Community Secondary School, Otuoke-Otuabagi who spoke on behalf of the other principals applauded VSF for the gesture.
She assured that the facilities would be maintained.
