COVID-19: FG discovers curious cases in Sokoto

The Federal Government has said that it discovered a curious finding in Sokoto State where the cluster of COVID-19 cases was in only one local government area.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, said this on Monday in Abuja, at the 33rd joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19.

He was represented by the Minister of State, Health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora.

This is as he also said the government is collaborating with top and notable religious leaders across the country to raise awareness on COVID-19 and efforts to curtain spread in the country.

According to him, a high level technical meeting on the output of the National COVID-19 Response Mid-Action Review has been conducted and that the output from this meeting will provide guidance in strengthening the nation’s response and develop strategies for reaching more communities.

He also said that a Ministerial team of expert has been dispatched to Calabar, Cross River State on a scoping mission to engage with state authorities and determine material and technical needs.

He said, “The mission to Sokoto (State) was successful and the team is presently in Maiduguri to support the state. A curious finding in Sokoto is the cluster of COVID-19 cases in only one local government area. The number of deaths has dropped and we are beginning to see a decline in positive cases in the state.”

He commended the state Governor Aminu Tambuwal for his support and commitment to the response in the state.

Speaking on Kano, Mamora said the response has been restructured to be more responsive and positioned to effectively tackle the pandemic.

He added that mortality has significantly reduced and that community engagement is paying off as more people are submitting themselves for testing.

“Testing capacity has thus increased to about 660 daily from 250 last week. The Ministry has directed that more test kits and laboratory consumables be sent to Kano to ensure the sustenance of the testing capacity,” he said.
