COVID-19: 2021 Lagos Polo tourney put on hold

The prestigious Lagos international tournament has become the second major polo tournament in the country to be put on hold this year, due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this month, Port Harcourt Polo Club was forced to call off the glamorous Niger Delta Polo Festival as the number of infections climbed on a daily basis, forcing the organizers to call off the 2021 edition of the annual polo fiesta.

Polo Royals learnt that the nation’s premier polo club, Lagos has equally suspended its international tournament as the state government battle to contain the second phase spread of the virus.

A statement by the Lagos Polo Club announced the suspension of the fiesta, blaming it on the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for the club to adhere to the safety protocol and guidelines specified by both the Presidential Task Force and the Lagos State Government.

The statement posted on the club’s notice board at the foremost Ribadu Road polo ground regretted the inconveniences that the suspension may have cost its traditional and prospective sponsors, partners and the general public, the suspension is hard on the visiting teams, players who have already made their bookings for the grand festival.

“It was very difficult for the management and the tournament committee to suspend the tournament that has for decades remains the biggest tourist attraction to Port Harcourt and indeed the entire Niger Delta region” the official lamented.
