Court sentences 3 rapists to 62 years jail

Hon. Justice E. E. Ita of Calabar Family Court Judicial Division has sentenced three rapists to 62 years imprisonment.

He also slammed them with a cumulative fine of N500,000.

The judge directed that the trio be sent to the correctional centre immediately.

He gave the sentence after the different cases had lingered for some time, according to Barrister James Ibor of the Child Network Protection and Basic Rights Counsel Initiative.

The three include 27-year-old Hassan Abdullahi who allegedly raped a 12-year-old child. He was sentenced to 25 years jail and N200,000 compensation to the survivor or if he failed to pay, he would spend additional two years in jail.

The court sentenced another suspect, one Nicholas Edet, to 21 years in jail for raping  a minor. Edet would also pay the sum of N100,000 compensation to the survivor or get additional one year in prison.

One Effiom Bassey was also sentenced to 16 years and six months imprisonment with additional N200,000 compensation to the survivor or additional two years in jail.

Ibor, whose child rights groups pursued the matters from onset to sentencing, expressed gratitude to the stakeholders who collaborated throughout the durations of the matters.
