An Ikeja chief magistrate’s court has remanded a 36-year-old woman, Mrs Peggy Adeleye, for allegedly battering her 14-year-old housemaid.
Adeleye was arrested after neighbours reported her to the police at the Isolo Division, Lagos State police command.
The suspect allegedly, on many occasions, maltreated the maid, Chinonye Ogeji.
Adeleye, a resident of Ojiaka Street, in the Ago area, Okota, of Lagos State, was consequently arrested and detained on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer.
The police alleged that the suspect inflicted severe injuries on the victim while flogging her with a cable. She was said to have been unable, during interrogation, to explain why she gave the victim such injuries.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, ordered that the suspect be charged to court, while the victim should be handed over to the relevant government agency.
Adeleye pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted her bail in the sum of N50,000, with one surety in like sum.
Osunsanmi ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till March 3, 2018.
