A 17-year-old girl, Esther Alex, has been remanded in a Makurdi Custodial Centre for allegedly setting her now-deceased boyfriend on fire.
Alex was arraigned on Tuesday before a Magistrate Court in Makurdi in Benue State for allegedly committing mischief by fire and culpable homicide.

First Information Report (FIR) indicated that the accused teenager, one Esther Alex, of No 1, Zaki Biam Street, Wadata in Makurdi went to the house of Chidimma Omah, 28 years old at No 17, Yandev Street of same Wadata in Makurdi and poured petrol in it while he was asleep and set him ablaze.
When the charges were read to the accused, she admitted to fully understand the content.
But, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction.
The prosecutor, Inspector Dominic Ochaba, therefore, asked that the accused be remanded in Makurdi Correctional Center, pending the conclusion of the investigation into the matter.
Counsel to the accused, S.O. Obekpa, however, did not object to the prosecution’s demand but drew the attention of the court to the First Information Report.
The Magistrate, Regina Ochokwunu, however, declined the application sought by the counsel to the accused and ordered that the accused be remanded in the Custodial Centre.
Ochokwunu adjourned the case to March 5, 2021, for further mention.
