A magistrates’ court in Kano on Wednesday ordered the remand of a 47-year-old Chinese, Geng Quanrong, for killing his Nigerian girlfriend, 22-year-old Ummulkulsum Buhari.
The police charged Geng, who lives in Nassarawa GRA, Kano, with culpable homicide.
The Magistrate, Hanif Sanusi-Chiroma, who did take the plea of Geng, ordered his remand in Kurmawa Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and adjourned to October 13.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Khalifa Auwal-Hashim, said that Geng committed the offence on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters, Kano.
He said that on the day at about 9pm, Geng attacked Ummulkulsum with a knife after a misunderstanding after which she was rushed to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, were she was pronounced dead.
Auwal-Hashim prayed the court to seek legal advice because the matter was a capital offence, noting that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain it. The offence, he said, contravened Section 221 of the Penal Code.
