Court remands 26-year-old for raping minor

Ekiti State Chief Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, has remanded one Olayitan Olatimehin, 26 at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti for 30 days over the rape of a 16-year-old student of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Magistrate Saka Afunso granted the order pending the completion of the police investigation.

Narrating his ordeal to the police, the victim said the defendant alongside his friends on September 12 around 9:30pm waylaid her while coming from where she went to buy things and seized her phone.

She said while struggling to recover it from him, he hit her head on the wall and became unconscious, adding that she recovered from the unconsciousness to find herself naked on the defendant bed with her pant torn and raped.

The matter was reported at the police station leading to the arrest of the defendant in Itapa Ekiti.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Oriyomi Akinwale, urged the court to remand the defendant to allow him forward the duplicate case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Akinwale said the offence ran contrary to and was punishable under section 31 of the Child Rights Laws of Ekiti State.
