Court orders Reps to stay action on Infectious Diseases Bill

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the House of Representatives to regularise its processes filed before the court in response to the suit challenging the Infectious Disease Bill before the house.

Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu said the respondents failed to attach evidence of penalty for late filing of the motion for the extension of time to regularise their reply to the suit.

She reiterated an earlier directive to parties not to take any step to undermine the jurisdiction of the court in the subject matter.

A former federal lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, had brought the suit asking the court to declare that the bill constitutes a gross abuse of, and is likely to infringe upon, his fundamental rights if eventually passed into law.

The suit was adjourned to June 15 for hearing.
