Court dissolves marriage over adultery, assault

A customary court in Ado-Ekiti has dissolved a 31-year-old marriage between a 52-year-old civil servant, Francis Adedara, and his wife, Oluwakemi, over domestic violence and adultery.

The petitioner, Mr Adedara, had taken the wife to court seeking dissolution of the marriage which produced four children: Adedara Opeyemi (31), Abimbola (22), Damilola (19) and Tomiwa (17), on grounds of adultery and violence.

He alleged that the respondent wanted to send an SMS to a man but that she mistakenly sent it to him and that she always assaulted him.

The respondent, Oluwakemi (51), denied beating the petitioner and rather accused him of beating her, adding that he was a pathological liar.

She also denied the adultery allegation, explaining that the message she mistakenly sent to him was meant for her patient, she being a nurse.

The President of the court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, dissolved the marriage, stating that with available evidence the marriage had gone beyond repair, and gave them a right of appeal within 30 days.
