The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has reiterated the determination of the army to get to the source of recent rumours of a coup plot to overthrow the current administration.
He spoke with journalists at a press conference yesterday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja to commence activities for this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
“We will continue to monitor for anyone who tries to destabilize the country…military misadventure into democracy should never repeat itself, we see it as misgivings between the political class and disgruntled officers,” he said.
Buratai vowed to go after detractors he referred to as terrorists who have migrated to the cyber space.
Responding to allegations in an online report that his family illegally owned properties in Dubai, Buratai said: “We have already defeated insurgents on the land, now they have migrated to cyber space and some electronic media.
“Terrorists who have migrated to cyber space, we will follow them to cyber space and equally clear their doubt…we are developing our own cyber warriors in the Nigerian Army and we will face them and defeat them.”
He also advised any officer affected in the recent compulsory retirement over allegations of corruption who is not satisfied with the decision to seek redress in court.
Buratia said: “I want to assure you that due process was followed, it’s a good idea that some of them are opting to go to court, that is the right place to get redress, some of them have written, and our legal department is looking into it.”
He listed activities for the celebration to include Juma’at prayers on Friday July 1 and an inter-denominational church service on Sunday.
On Saturday, July 2, the army will embark on major sanitation activities in communities and major roads close to army formations and units across the country.
The highpoint of the celebration will be a Field Training Exercise (FTX) from July 11 to 14 in which the 1 Brigade will carry out war games in the Bakura Forest, Gusau, Zamfara State.
