Council makes case for Nigeria to procure two new satellites

Two satellites should be added to Nigeria’s only communication satellite, NIGCOMSAT-1, the National Council on Communications and Digital Economy (NCCDE) has suggested.

The council made the suggestion at its 8th regular meeting in Abuja, a statement from the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) said on Monday.

Daily Trust reports that Nigeria’s only communications satellite was launched on May 13, 2007, and it has almost expired in orbit.

“The call for the launching of High-throughput satellite, NigComSat-2 and NigComSat-3 communication satellites for continuity of services as NigComSAT-1R is fast approaching its End of Life (EOF)”, the statement signed the General Manager Public Affairs, Adamu Idris, said.

Idris said the council took the step in accordance with the position presented to it by the NIGCOMSAT Ltd team led by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Abimbola Alale.

The council adopted the presentation after thorough deliberations and syndicate group scrutiny, evaluation and ratification of all issues presented to them, he stated.
