Stakeholders in Sokoto  have noted  corruption as the bane of efficient civil service and  stressed the need to restructure the  civil service   to ensure accountability and transparency in the discharge of its responsibilities.

"In order to drive change in the state, the civil service must be seen to be  progressive and efficient in its dealing.
As a result, the efforts  should be accelerated to professionalize the civil service," they added.

These were contained  in a communique issued at the end of a 2 – Day retreat for Directors of Administration and Finance of Sokoto state civil service organized by state government in collaboration with National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN.

The retreat attended by 200 participants from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, identified service  delivery, accountability and credibility as  essential ingredient of an efficient civil service.

The participants  also  noted the role of monitoring and evaluation in positively influencing workplace attitude and quality assurance.

"In the same vein the retreat agreed that reward system is an important motivation factor for workers. Therefore, there is need to reinforce the practice for optimum work output, " they  stated.

The participants  welcomed the various reforms introduced by the present administration in Sokoto  towards ensuring  transparent and effective civil service just as they lauded  the state government for its "massive investment" in capacity building in the various sectors of the public service.

While  stressing  the importance of budget in providing  framework for implementing major strategic decisions and in ensuring  efficient allocation of resources, they pointed out the  need for strict adherence to budgetary provision by ministries department and agencies.
