The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches in Nigeria to conduct worship and other church services through house fellowship cells or online to curb the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
CAN President, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, disclosed this on Thursday in a statement.
According to him, there should be adherence to the ban on the presence of more than 50 people in a gathering as declared by most state governments.
“Therefore, use house cell-based service or online service. Where possible, particularly for churches who do not have online system, services can be broken into shifts of not more than 50 members in each shift,” Ayokunle said in the release signed by his spokesman, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji.
The CAN leader also urged Christians across the country to observe Sunday 22 and 29 March, 2020 as days of prayers against the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria and globally.
He urged all churches to strictly follow the guidelines for combating COVID-19 in all their gatherings as “we are trusting God for victory over the plague”.
“Our prayers should be as follows: that God should stop the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria and all over the world; that God should protect Nigerians from this disease and that God should heal those who have been infected already,” he said.
He also urged that each branch/assembly should provide alcohol-based hand sanitizer for use, regular washing of hands with soap and water; avoiding use of same towel; maintain at least one-metre (or three feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
“Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth; drink hot water regularly; practice respiratory hygiene by covering mouth and nose with bent elbow or tissue when coughing or sneezing and to dispose the used tissue immediately,” he added.
