The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has announced plans to introduce mandatory one-year residency programme and oath-taking for engineering graduates nationwide.
Prof. Ademola Adisa, the Registrar of COREN, disclosed this Tuesday during a three-day regional train-the-trainer workshop on the implementation of outcome-based education in engineering programmes in Nigerian universities held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He said the programme was to equip engineering graduates with skills that meet both local and international employment standards in the engineering and technology sectors.
Adisa said the proliferation of engineering programmes across different faculties has made it necessary for COREN to strengthen its accreditation system.

“With the current restructuring of COREN and expanding of activities covered in its mandates, we are bringing back SITSIE by institutionalizing a one-year mandatory engineering residency, which all engineering graduates must embark on for more practical and industry exposure, upon graduation.
“It is therefore very important and mandatory that your Faculty of Engineering submits to COREN its yearly list/database of engineering students across all levels for Indexing.
“Oath-Taking of engineering graduates by COREN will commence shortly as well,” he said.
Adisa also announced plans for a joint accreditation system between COREN and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) for engineering programmes.
He disclosed COREN’s intention to introduce a new framework for the renewal of annual engineering practicing licenses.
