Katsina state government, the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Council (NLC) and ALDUSAR Gas Nigeria Limited have entered into a mutual agreement aimed at encouraging the use of cooking gas as against firewood among civil servants in the state.
Daily Trust reports that the agreement entails provision of cooking gas, cylinders and other equipment to civil servants to be repaid in three instalments.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the state Head of Service Idris Tune, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lawal Ado said government has for long being trying to address environmental degradation by ensuring best safe environmental practices noting that this collaboration is a surest way to achieving that.
He said felling of trees and desert encroachment is a serious threat to the state as such cooking with gas will go a long way in addressing such challenge.
In his remarks, the President of ALDUSAR Group, Muhammadu Usman Sarki, said the usage of stove and kerosene for cooking is continuously putting the state at more dangers noting that it is more economical and healthier to use cooking gas.
About 1,000 workers have since applied for the pilot phase of the scheme which will later be extended to workers across the 34 local government areas of the state.
