National President of the Foundation for the Protection of Women and Children in Nigeria, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani has called on the Federal government to construct more remand homes across the country as a way of curtailing the proliferation of illegal rehabilitation centres.
Reacting to the recent raids on rehabilitation centres, also called ‘torture homes’ in Kaduna state, Hajiya Ramatu further called on governors of the 36 states of Nigeria to construct more juvenile remand centre to curtail the activities of illegal torturing centre that are violating the rights of youth in various detention centre.
According to her, “The raid on various detention centres is a welcome development, but there is need for government to build more remand training institutes so as to change the lives of youth for the better as building more juvenile remand centre by states and federal governments will help to curtail the existence of traditional rehabilitation centres and other illegal places were hundreds of youth are keep in inhuman conditions.”
While noting that juvenile remand centres are places juvenile offenders are remanded and given both educational and vocational training to rehabilitate and reform them before reintegrating them into the society, she added, “We appreciate the effort of the government of Kaduna and Katsina state government as well as the Nigerian Police Force for rescuing hundreds of inmates.”
She attributed the number of youth in such rehabilitation centres to failure of parents to live up to their responsibility saying, “God will surely asked every parent how he took care of his family.”
Ramatu who is also a specialist in Conflict Prevention in Africa informed that there is need for wealthy individuals, corporate organization and volunteers to support government’s effort.
She appealed to all drug enforcement agencies and other volunteers on drug abuse to redouble their effort in the fight against drug abuse in communities which will checkmate the activities of drug vendors in the area.
