The community members of Durumin Zungura layin gidan Inuwa me Mai in Kano Municipal local government area have called on authorities to come to the their aid by converting a three-year-old abandoned school project in the community into a clinic.
A Chronicle correspondent who visited the community reports that, the compound where the abandoned school structure is located has been converted into a business arena as various buying and selling activities are taking place there.
However, all the structures of the school are under lock and key.
Chronicle investigation revealed that, the school project was one of the federal constituency projects embarked upon by a former house member representing Kano Municipal local government area.
According to one of the residents of the area, Malam Abdulhamid Isah, the structure of the school was built about three years ago and after virtually completing the three blocks of two classes each, it was abandoned.
“Even though the community members were not consulted, as no any form of need assessment was conducted, the school structure was constructed and later abandoned. We know a huge amount of public fund was committed into the project and from all indications, the contractors have done a very good job. However, it pains us as members of the community to see such huge financial commitment being wasted, that is why we are appealing to the authorities to consider converting the structure into a clinic because that’s what we really need now,” Abdulhamid said.
Another, resident Malam Shehu Uba Durumi who led other residents of the area, said the community did not need additional school and that what it needed was either a vocational centre or a clinic.
“We have more than five schools around our community and what we didn’t even know is whether this school structure being constructed is a primary school or a secondary school. However, whatever the case may be what we need presently isn’t the school but a clinic or a vocational centre where our women will be trained and empowered. As you can see, the place has been turned into a mini-market and it is sad to see such an investment being abandoned,” he said.
