Stakeholders in the health sector say the utilization of effective community engagement approach is key to uptake of health Insurance and attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country.
They stated this on Thursday in Abuja during the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) experience sharing forum organized by the Development Governance International Foundation (DGFI) with support of the Christian Aid.
They said the deployment of community engagement approach for the UHC project implemented by DGIF in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa State with funding from the Christian Aid not only improve health insurance but also service utilization among the residents.
Dr Gafar Alawode, programme director, DGIF, said the project which looked at the uptake from the informal sector, helped increase service utilization among the poor and vulnerable.

Obele Oluchukwu, Programme Coordinator , Christian Aid, said while the country was still far from the goal of attaining UHC by 2030, it is gradually getting there with the signing into law of the mandatory health insurance scheme.
He said the Christian has been funding DGIF programme for three years, and supporting government in health financing and UHC.
Dr Gaza Gwamna, Executive Secretary Nasarawa State Health Insurance Agency, said results had been recorded in local government areas where community approach intervention is implemented compared to the places where it is not.
