5 Osun communities end female circumcision

Five communities in Olorunda Local Government Area of Osun State on Friday publicly declared an end to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) practice.

The communities which include Enikanoyun,  Biirofagbemi, Atelewo, Ayekale and Otaefun made the declaration at an event organised by Action Health Incorporated (AHI) in Collaboration with the UNFPA, Ministry of Health and the State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.

The event was attended by representatives of the communities and the United Nations Population Fund Focal Point Person on FGM in the State, Mrs Aduke Obelawo.

While speaking on the occassion, Obelawo reiterated that FGM was a dangerous practice and commended the communities for their commitment to end the practice.

Officials of the State Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Mrs Toyin Adelowokan and Adewale Funmilola said the communities were adequately sensitised on the dangers of FGM practice and that they willingly agreed to stop the practice.

AHI representative, Abdulrasheed Nuriyah said the objective of the exercise was to ensure total eradication of FGM practice and secure the future of the female children.

Speaking on behalf of their communities, Fatai Adelu, Pastor Isaac Oloyede, Chief Afolabi Muritala and Fatai Aremu declared that female circumcision has become an abomination in their various communities henceforth.
