Commonwealth Game: Adekuoroye strikes Nigeria’s sixth gold medal

Olympian and Nigerian Wrestling Star, Odunayo Adekuoroye, has defeated her rival Anshu Malik of India to win Gold in the Women’s 57kg Freestyle Wrestling at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The 2018 Commonwealth champion came under pressure, but she was equal to the task.

She defeated her opponent 6-4 in the final to successfully defend the crown she won in Gold Coast four years ago.

Getting to the final, the reigning African champion defeated Canada’s Hannah Taylor in the semi-final in a swash-buckling 10-0 victory.

Nigeria has so far won six gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In 2014, she competed in the women’s freestyle 53 kg event at the Commonwealth Games where she won a gold medal.

At the 2015 World Wrestling Championships, she won a bronze medal and at the 2017 World Wrestling Championships, she won the silver medal at the women’s freestyle 55 kilograms.
