A peace and reconciliation committee has been set up to promote dialogue in southern Kaduna amidst worry over increasing cases of clashes between Fulani and locals.
The Southern Kaduna Committee on Peace and Reconciliation promote sensitisation and mobilisation, building confidence and mutual interaction among the diverse people of the area.
The committee is a joint forum of concerned southern Kaduna people who have agreed to come together irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation, according to a statement signed by Ibrahim Abdullahi and Jonah Bonet, co-chairmen of the committee.
They said the committee plans to reach out to all critical stakeholders in order to build a common consensus among the people.
"The committee having realised that for any peace and reconciliation to succeed, the people of the area must have the zeal and will to forgive the past and resolve to live in peace. No amount of security presence will guarantee peace if the people are not willing to embrace peace. It is therefore our cardinal objective to engage the people through dailouge advocacy and sensitisation in order to achieve our goal,” the statement read.
“We are confident of achieving a sustainable peace because the people at the grass root are willing to embrace peace if only we can be able to break manipulation by one few leaders including political, religious and traditional. The committee will soon embark on tour of all the local governments of southern Kaduna for dialogue, sensitisation and consultation with all critical stakeholders."
They however condemned the recent attacks in some communities in the area and prayed for the repose of the oils of those killed.
They called on the southern Kaduna people to forgive the past and embrace peace without which there can be no meaningful development.
