Commissioner laments illegal taxation of cows

He also decried the alleged imposition of levies on farm products conveyed to other states

Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Cross River State, Okon Owuna, has lamented the alleged illegal taxation of cows and other livestock from the northern parts of Nigeria by tax cabals in the state.

He also decried the alleged imposition of levies on farm products conveyed to other states by illegal tax agents, urging farmers to jointly report such extortions.

Owuna spoke Friday when he hosted a delegation of rubber farmers in the state who were in his office to table their ordeals in the hands of illegal levy and tax collectors in the state.

“Livestock farmers, especially herdsmen, have approached my office, saying the illegal tax agents now tax each of their cows that comes into the state N9,000 as against N13,000 official rate per truck of 20 or 25 cows,” he said.

Owuna called on the farmers who were led by visiting national president of NARPPMAN, Prince Peter Igbinosun and state chairman, Rev Inameti Umoh, to raise a letter of complaints to him so that he can officially delve into them in conjunction with the security agents.

The commissioner said that the illegal taxations have become a thing of concern to the state government, and will not be tolerated.
