The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recorded no fewer than 260 cases of rape and human rights abuses among many others in the past 12 months across Yobe State.
The coordinator of the commission in the state, Mallam Labaran Babangida, stated this to newsmen during the commemoration of the 2023 International Human Rights Day and 16 Days Activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence held in Damaturu.
He said the commission recorded 260 complaints, more than 200 centred on allegations of violation of women and girls, adding that it serves as the last stop for people who are less privileged; orphans and vulnerable groups who are mostly children and women.
According to him, most of the cases were of rape, violent abuse between husbands and their wives, misunderstanding, gender-based violence, and failure in the responsibility of husbands, among others.
