Commission installs energy saving ACs, LED bulbs for Kano hospital

Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has begun installing 20 energy-efficient air conditioning systems and 500 LED lighting bulbs at Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano under its Energy Efficiency Project.

Speaking at the commencement of the installation, a Principal Scientific Officer of the Commission, Ahmad Tijjani Ahmad, said an audit carried out at the facility showed that the air-conditioning system was the major consumer of power.

He said it was estimated that by the time all the installations are completed within two weeks, the hospital could save up to N100, 000 every month from the electricity bill.

“We started by promoting Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) but for many years now we promote Light Emitting Diodes (LED) because using LEDs, more energy can be saved. This is very important because of the increasing electricity tariff,” he said.

This project, he said, is one of the six currently taking place across the six geo-political zones of the country.

In his remarks, the representative of the hospital, Shuaibu Garba, lauded the commission for the gesture, which he said would go a long way in saving cost and resources that could be channeled to other areas of the hospital’s need.
