A statement issued by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) spokesperson, Seun Olagunju, said one of its transmission towers, tower No 69 on the Afam-Alaoji 132kV double circuit(DC) transmission line collapsed on December 19, 2013 during the restringing of the vandalized sections of the 132kV double circuit transmission line.
Electricity supplied through the 132kV double circuit transmission line, according to the statement, helps to augment power supply to Port-Harcourt, to avoid overloading the 150MVA transformer at Afam in Rivers State, whenever the Afam plant is unavailable.
TCN however noted that the effect would not be felt immediately since most industries have closed for the holidays, and that its quick response engineering team is already on ground at the site, to assess the level of damage with the view to putting in place remedial structures before rebuilding the tower and completing the restringing of the system early in the new year.
