Coalition seeks assent to older persons’ rights bill, inclusion in NHIS

The Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Older Persons (Rights and Privileges) Bill 2020.

The coalition, during a road walk Tuesday in Abuja to celebrate and draw attention to the plight of older persons in the country, decried the lack of laws for social security

Its president, Senator Eze Ajoku, lamented over the president’s refusal to assent to the bill.

“We hope that he (Buhari) will have a rethink before the end of his position so that he can assent to this bill that says you can’t criminalize older persons because they are old. In some villages they are molested and killed, older persons are people god has given grace to get old. Why do you mistreat older people?”

He also called for the inclusion of older persons in health insurance as they need money to look after themselves.
