Climate change: FG introduces ‘80% wood saving stove’ to Northeast women

The Federal Government says the use of Atmosfair Save80 Clean Cookstoves, a climate friendly device, will help to address challenges of climate change and reverse environmental degradation in northeast states.

Director-General of National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr Salisu Dahiru, who disclosed this during a one-day sensitization program in Maiduguri,Borno State, said the stoves will curtail use of firewood by 80 percent.

Dahiru said one of the major causes of deforestation in Nigeria is the widespread use of firewood, which results in the loss of trees and forests, hence the need to involve women to save Nigeria’s ecosystem.

“Women, especially those in rural areas, are very critical to achieving success in the climate change campaigns because of their daily duty of using firewood to cook for the family.

“By embracing save80 clean cook stoves, Nigerians can make a significant contribution to achieving it’s environmental safety goals while also saving money for sustainable living,” the DG, represented by his special adviser Mahmud Yusuf said.

The Director of Public Sector, Atmosfair climate and sustainability limited, Abdurrahhman Sulaiman Bawa, said the stainless steel clean stove is designed to use 80 percent less fuel and produce 80 percent less pollution than traditional stoves.

“We, together with To be connected Nigeria, collaborated with other partners, went round the six geopolitical zones and sensitizes women on this, and we plan by next year to go round the 36 states and later on, to the 774 LGAs of the country,” he said.

Ambassador Faruk Yabo, Chairman, Advisory Board of Atmosfair Climate and Sustainability Limited, producer of the clean cookstoves, said an MoU was signed between the National Council on climate change, Atmosfair Germany, Great Green Wall And National agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure to ensure that the environmental friendly stove cover the nation to prevent defforestation that encourage afforestation.
