The Green Building Council (GBC) says it will control use of building materials in efforts to reduce impact of climate change on the environment.
Alhaji Murtala Aliyu, President, Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN) who is a member of board of trustees of GBC, revealed this when he spoke to journalists at the second distinguished lecture series of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, FCT chapter on Thursday.
He said the construction industry has the role to ensure that structures put up are green in nature.
“We will look at the nature of construction. For instance, when you mix cement, it emits certain gases so we are looking at a situation where construction materials will be green compliant.
“The process of replacing cement is quite challenging so the important thing is to realise that there is need to address it.
What the GBC is going to do firstly, we will check the list of building items that affect the environment and begin to address them one by one. And then we will talk to manufacturers and agree on what to change, what to increase and what to decrease and even in the application, we will ensure that the appropriate methods are used to try and reduce the effects on the environment,” he said.
