The religious leaders made the calls in respective sermons during the Christ-mas celebration in Gombe. Pastor Joel Datti of the Ecclesial Church Winning All (ECWA) reminded Christians that Christmas is not just a celebration but an opportunity to ensure that Christ lived in their lives.
He said Christ is the salvation that God gave to his people after man disobeyed him and that Christians should use the opportunity to reconcile with one another.
“Christmas is not a time for eating, drinking and other luxuries and vices such as fornication adultery, robbery as some people engage in such acts during the period. It is a time of joy, happiness, freedom from condemnation and reconciliation with fellow human beings and God,” he said.
In his sermon, Rev. Fr John Keane, Parish Priest of St James Catholic Church Gombe, said the circumstances and place of birth of Jesus showed his simplicity and humility, hence Christians should emulate such virtues. Keane admonished Christians to be mindful of the way they celebrate Christmas so that they would inherit the kingdom of God. He urged all human beings to embrace Jesus, ensure peace and harmony as preached by Jesus.
“As we celebrate the Christmas, we should remember the verse that says ‘God so much loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that those who believe in him will not perish but have everlasting life’”., he said.
The celebration in the state was peaceful yesterday as Christians were seen in new dresses trooping into their respective churches early in the morning without any ugly incident. The faithful were also seen sharing food and other items to friends, relatives and neighbours in the spirit of the time.
