A 32- year -old Christian cleric, Izechukwu Okeke, who allegedly gave a man water to drink which

caused partial deafness, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, who resides at 17, Roland St., Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for causing a breach of the peace.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Joseph Ajebe told the court that the offence was committed on May 7 at the residence of the accused.

Ajebe said the complainant, Mr Obinna Ogbona, and his friend went to the accused’s house for prayer and counselling.

“The accuse gave the complainant water to drink that his prayers have been answered.

“A week later, the complainant became `deaf and dumb’ and the accused was apprehended, ” he said.

The offence contravened Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Alexander Komolafe, in his ruling, granted the accused a bail of N50,000 with two sureties in
like sum.

Komolafe adjourned the case until June 19 for mention.
