Clear air on Amotekun, group urges S/West governors

A Civil Society Organisation, Societal Safety Network (SSN) has appealed to South West governors who recently initiated a regional security outfit codenamed Amotekun to clear air on how it will operate.

Addressing newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, the Executive Director of the group, Abdulràhman Agboola argued that if not backed by law, the operations of Amotekun in the South West would later endanger the lives of the Yorubas living in the North.

“Can our governors tell the world who are the personnel of Operation Amotekun? Who trained the personnel and will they bear arms or not? Do they have power to arrest, detain and prosecute or where will they keep suspects upon arrests?

“We seriously frown at the hurried nature Amotekun was formed without considering the plight of the Yorubas living in the North on two grounds. First, the well pronounced racial profiling in the conceptualisation of the platform and second, the shoddy announcement of Operation Amotekun without regard for proper legal framework and clear cut modes of operation,” he said.

The group expressed worry over the security situation in the country and urged the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) to work with the federal government and security agencies to stem the tide.
