Civil servant, 55, allegedly defiles 8-year-old girl

A 55-year-old civil servant in Benue, Samuel Iornav, was on Friday remanded in prison custody by a Makurdi magistrate court over alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl.

The magistrate, Mrs. J.O Ayia, ordered that the accused person be remanded in the Federal Prison, Makurdi after the case was heard.

The police prosecutor, Mr Ato Godwin, told the court that the case was reported at the ā€˜Dā€™ Division Police Station on April 8, 2019 by one Emmanuel Ejeh, who resides behind NUJ office, Makurdi.

It was alleged that the accused person forcefully had carnal knowledge of the minor, and had voluntarily confessed to committing the crime.

When the case came up for mention, the plea of the accused person was not taken for want of jurisdiction.

The prosecution said that investigation into the matter was still in progress, and asked the court for another date for mention.

The case was thereafter adjourned to May 6 for further mention (NAN)
