Christmas: NGO supports less privileged with gifts

A non-governmental organisation, Az-Zawaj Women and Children Intervention Centre, has donated relief items including foodstuffs, drinks, clothes and medical supplies to 121 persons residing in the ANAWIM home in Dagiri, Gwagwalada, Abuja.

The centre, which assists women and children and mentally-challenged adults, was established in 2017. It also provided revolving loans worth N250,000 to 25 market women in Tungan Maje also in Gwagwalada, majority of whom are widows, it said.

The founder of the centre, Asma’u Abe Wala, while presenting the items said the centre, in the spirit of Christmas, felt the need to celebrate with the less privileged in the society.

She said the organization’s aim is to offer support in empowering women and the less privileged economically and promote better standard of living for the community.

She also said the centre is aimed at promoting wealth creation for rural dwellers as well as promoting job creation by supporting small scale businesses.

“The aim and objective of the NGO is to conduct skills acquisition for women and widows, training for disadvantaged and vulnerable families in order to make them self-reliant for entrepreneurship development,” she said.

She said the aim of the visit was to make the less privileged feel loved and cared for in this festive season.

While appreciating the gesture, founder of ANAWIM Home, SR. Oresoa Selo-Ojema, said the gift items will go a long way in catering for the needs of members in the home.

She also prayed that more organizations would remember the less privileged and support them in the spirit of Christmas.

The Chief of Tungan Maje, who was represented by Mohammed Abdullahi, said the loans provided to traders in the community would go a long way in supporting the women in expanding their business and supporting the home front.
