The Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) has called on the federal government to employ more Environmental Health Officers to assist in fighting cholera outbreaks ravaging the country.

Registrar of the council, Dr Yakubu B. Muhammed, made the call at a 2-day capacity building for small-scale food vendors on hygiene application in food processing from farm to table in Kaduna South Constituency.

According to him, the issue of environmental health was important in the communities looking at the indices of diseases such as cholera and other water-borne illnesses ravaging communities in the country.

Mohammed said the water-borne illnesses (cholera inclusive) account for more than 70 percent of diseases ravaging Nigerian communities currently, hence the need for government to employ health officers to educate the citizens.

According to him, if the government recruits more officers and deploy them to health facilities, they would assist in educating and preventing cholera outbreak and other diseases in the country.
