Chiroma operated in murky military regime – NLC President

President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, says Comrade Ali Chiroma, one of his predecessors, sacrificed his life for the betterment of Nigeria.

Chiroma died at the age of 92 at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, after a brief illness, on Tuesday.

Ajaero, who attended the 3rd day prayers of the ex-labor leader in Maiduguri on Friday, said Chiroma operated in the murky environment of the military regime that required courage and intellectual vigour to survive as the NLC President.

“He was the President as at a time when mortals will not want to lead the NLC, he was the President when NLC is trying to consolidate, when there was direct interference by the military who saw and still see NLC as the only opposition when they come to power,” he said while addressing newsmen.

The NLC President promised to aggregate the leadership style of late Chiroma and other past leaders to advance the organised labour to a higher pedestal.

Also, the Former President of the Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, described Chiroma as an embodiment of courage who was well celebrated beyond the shores of Nigeria.

He called on the upcoming generation of leaders to inculcate some of his attributes of courage and sacrifice, maintaining that the country has lost an icon.

His eldest son, Alhaji Usman Chiroma, thanked President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Borno state Governor, Babagana Zulum, and all those that have sent in messages of condolence to the family.
