Children write Buhari, want child-sensitive policies, strategies implemented

Children across the country have called on the government to double its investment in children and prioritise the full implementation of child sensitive policies and strategies nationwide.

They made the call yesterday in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari as part of activities to mark this year’s Day of the African Child.

They called for the establishment of at least one specialized children’s court and dedicated law enforcement units within the Nigerian Police, the security and defence forces, agencies and services in each of the six geo-political zones of the country to fast-track the full implementation of the VAPP (2015) and Child Rights Act (2003).

They said: “The government, at all levels, should prioritize the implementation and domestication of the Child Rights Act 2003. This will provide children in Nigeria with the necessary legal policy framework for seeking justice when our rights are denied or abused.”

The children also  demanded an end to all forms of harmful practices and violence against children in Nigeria and Africa.

The letter was signed by Madina Abdulkadri, member, State Children Parliament, Borno and Girl Champion, Save the Children International (SCI); Ibrahim Zanna Sunoma, Speaker, State Children Parliament, Borno and Purity Oriaifo,  Speaker, Children Parliament, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Girl Champion, SCI, among others.
