Chieftaincy tussle: Royal house accuses Plateau govt of defying court order

Nhara royal house in Jahr Chiefdom of Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State has accused the state and the local governments of flouting a court order restraining the selection of the village head of the area.

Alhaji Hudu Bawa Garga, who spoke on behalf of the royal house, alleged that the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Sylvanus Tapgun, had asked the presiding officer of the ministry to go ahead with the selection, despite an order by the state High Court stopping the process.

He described the procedure to select the village head by the state government as undemocratic and disrespectful to the rule of law.

“It is unfortunate that this was happening under a democratically elected government,” the royal spokesman said.

“The issue is in court I won’t comment on the matter for now,” the commissioner told our reporter when contacted.

In a court order dated December 29, 2020, and made available to Daily Trust, the state High Court had restrained the defendants from conducting the said selection pending the hearing of the motion on notice scheduled to hold today, January 6, 2021.
