The Gombe State Chief Judge, Justice Hakila Y. Heman, has released nine prison inmates from the Gombe Central Prison.
The inmates regained freedom yesterday following the intervention of a Criminal Justice Committee chaired by the chief judge.
Justice Heman the released inmates were found to be unlawfully detained and stayed longer period in the prison.
He urged the police to accelerate prosecution of pending cases.
The state Comptroller of Prison, Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu, said the 379-capacity Gombe Central Prison currently houses over 1,000 inmates.
The comptroller, represented by Deputy Comptroller, Haruna Lawrence, attributed the congestion to delay of advice from the Department of Public Prosecution, among others.
