Centre for Information Science seeks N512m to reinvent self

One of Africa’s premier institutes for information science housed at University of Ibadan is seeking more than N512 million to reinvent itself.

The Africa Regional Centre for Information Science (ARCIS) alone in West Africa, after a sister centre in South Africa, marked 25th anniversary this year and has included a new N300m faculty building for the first time among its needs.

Rehabilitation and furnishing will bring its building cost to more than N325m.

It a solicitation mail it sent out to alumni ahead of its silver jubilee in Ibadan, it gave a breakdown of its need.

The centre is looking for N21.6m to pay for teaching equipment and infrastructure, including computer systems that will go into its IT lab and N2m textbook for its library.

It hopes to spend N30m on international staff training, another N30m on academic staff exchange and a separate N25m on student exchange programmes with similar institutes across the world.

More than 1500 high-level information professionals have gone through its master’s and doctoral degree programme, with another 3,500 in other aspects of information services across Ghana, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

ARCIS also wants N10m as endowment for prizes, with a bottom limit of N1.2m.
