Centenary Celebration: NCCM to declare 100 heritage sites national monument

He made the disclosure in Abuja when Curators of the North-eastern museums comprising of Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Maiduguri, Borno as well as representatives of the states Commissioners of Culture paid him a courtesy visit over his re-appointment by President Jonathan for another four years term.
The Director General said that this is part of the activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria`s Centenary celebration.
According to him, “100 heritage sites have been identified as National Monuments across the country especially those related to the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Protectorate, our colonial past and other things that relate to Nigerianess.
“These 100 sites have been documented and the process of stakeholder’s consultation has been done. All the communities where the sites are located have been contacted and we are hopeful that after giving out notices in newspapers which is part of the conditions to be fulfilled, then it will be declared.”
He noted that the monuments were another opportunity to promote peace and unity in Nigeria saying that within the next one or two years, the commission would have reached some form of agreement on the return of the Benin artefacts held in foreign museums.  
While thanking President Jonathan for his re-appointment, he maintained that he would focus his attention on making NCMM not just as an educational centre but to fully commercialize some of their activities so as to generate more funds for enhanced service delivery.
Earlier, the Curator of Adamawa Musuem, Mr Inuwa Babantata commended the DG and his management team for embarking on massive projects that cut across the North-eastern states like the establishment of museums saying that it would increase employment generation and enhance tourism potentials in the states.
