Members of the two factions at the Senate have been holding marathon meetings over the fate of the Senate President Bukola Saraki who is set to face trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
The meetings, which started weekend, continued yesterday.
Our correspondent reliably gathered that the camp loyal to Saraki, the “Like Minds” had their meeting on Sunday.
However, the “Unity Forum” whose members backed Ahmed Lawan for the Senate presidency in line with the wishes of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been meeting since Friday.
A source in Lawan camp said their meetings would continue until when Saraki resigns and concentrates on his trial.
“Our meetings are not limited to our camp. We have other senators who are in the other side. We want him to leave and concentrate on his case at the CCT,” he said.
Spokesman of the camp, Senator Kabiru Marafa, confirmed the meetings and insisted that Saraki must resign.
But the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi said Saraki won’t resign over the CCT trial.
He said following a meeting on Sunday by some senators and wide consultations over the Supreme Court verdict in the appeal on the preliminary matters filed by the Senate President, it was resolved among others “That from the beginning of the trial last September, we have declared that this case is not about any fight against corruption. It is simply a case of political vendetta. Our position remains the same. We still believe that the case is politically motivated.”
