The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has enjoined biomedical engineers and medical physicists to increase efforts towards equipping themselves with cutting-edge skills forquality cancer care delivery.
The director general of the agency, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, gave the advice in Abuja during the training organised by the Institute for Biomedical Engineers and Medical Physicists across the six geo-political zones of the country.
He said NICRAT is saddled with the responsibility of providing effective and efficient leadership in cancer research, treatment and control in Nigeria of which training and retraining of all categories of healthcare providers is key.
He said the training is, no doubt, directly connected to the mandates of the institute, especially, considering the important contribution of biomedical engineers and medical physicists in the care and treatment of all forms of cancers.

He said, “The training is aimed at re-equipping the biomedical engineers and medical physicists with the needed cutting-edge and contemporary knowledge and skills in cancer care to enable them perform optimally as regards the effective maintenance of radiotherapy equipment and improved treatment planning techniques.”
Prof. Aliyu said NICRAT would continue to train and retrain all relevant healthcare personnel with a view to improving their capacity for greater productivity and optimal performance in the treatment of all forms of cancer.
“It is pertinent to put on record that last week, NICRAT trained health experts drawn from primary and secondary health facilities on cervical cancer referral and psycho-oncology in the six geo-political zones of the country,” he added.
