About 2001 cases of maltreatment, rape and other abuses against children have been recorded in Cross River State in two years, Child Protection Network has said.
The group’s principal partner, Barrister James Ibor who spoke to journalists on the issues of rape and victimisation of children in the state Sunday however said less than ten convictions were obtained in courts.
Ibor said they had rendered practical services to 715 such child victims, providing what he described as psycho-social, legal, educational and other supports to them.
“Due to the usual delays in court proceedings, we have only obtained judgement in about ten cases so far out of over 2001 child abuse cases we have handling presently.
“We want to caution against the rising allegations that children are witches, cases where minors are raped, as well as maltreatment of wards by their guardians’’, he said.
