Businessman nabbed by the police for allegedly issuing a N7m dud cheque

The police in Lagos State yesterday arraigned a 54-year-old man, Olanrewanju Bello Abdullahi, yesterday before an Ikeja Magistrate Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing and issuing a dud cheque as a form of payment to Covenant Transport and Leasing Company Ltd.

The police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, N. Peter, told the court that on August 1, 2014 at about 1.30pm on the Lagos Island, Abdullahi stole a 30-ton truck bucket valued at N7 million, property of Covenant Transit and Leasing Company.

Peter also told the court that the accused person, on November 30, 2018 at about 11am at No. 30, Aromire Street, Ikeja, issued a Standard Chartered Bank cheque No. 05220984 in the sum of N7m in favour of Covenant Transport and Leasing Company Ltd.

The court learnt that when the cheque was presented for payment, it was dishonoured on the ground there was no funds in the account.

Abdullahi pleaded not guilty to the three-count criminal charge the police levelled against him.

Chief Magistrate Y. O. Aje-Afunwa admitted him to bail of N800,000, with a surety, and adjourned the case till March 17, 2020 for further hearing.
